The Fetal Alcohol Syndrome infant simulator we use represents only some of alcohol’s many effects on a developing fetus. The demonstrator doll has a small head circumference, narrow eye openings, flat midface, flat nose bridge, ear abnormalities, and is small for gestational age. It demonstrates the visible injuries from alcohol comsumption during pregnancy. You can’t see brain damage in a real alocol affected infant, but you can observe the learning difficulties, behavioral problems and mental disabilities that occur along with the visible physical imapirments. This demonstrator does provide a vivid display of those physical abnormalites.
Electronic simulators show the dramatic and devastating effects of that occur when a baby is prenatally exposed to drugs. A life-like demonstrator with a painful facial expression and tiny limbs which are small for its gestational age (observed in drug-affected babies) bear the recorded cries of a real drug-affected infant. Withdrawal tremors demonstrated by this doll hit home with teenagers and adults alike.
Through the use of anatomically correct simulator dolls , I provide presentations to adolescents at risk of using drugs and alcohol during pregnancy in an effort to prevent FAS/FAE and drug-affected babies.
